"Of late, a lot of heat has been posted on-list revolving around an off-list email exchange between myself and John.

I have discussed the email only with those whose concern it was to know of it; these are -- and I intend them to remain -- the only public comments I have on the matter.

Of those who have seen it, I ask a favor. As the person to whom the letter was addressed, I ask for commenting about it on the list to stop. John cannot defend himself without publicly revealing his words, and both he *and* those he mentioned would find this embarrassing.

The matter has been suitably closed. To open it again, publicly, is unfair.

I understand if some involved might object; if anyone has a problem with this, contact me *direct* and *off list* at (email withheld)"
